Breast cancer is a growing problem among women. In fact, according to Breastcancer.org, nearly 13 percent of all U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer. In 2018 alone, over 200,000 new cases were diagnosed. The only way to promote the optimal prognosis is to get routine mammograms from Duni Women’s Healthcare, serving Olympia Fields, IL and the surrounding region, to detect the problem early.
What is a Mammogram?
A mammogram is an X-ray image of the inside of your breasts. We use it as a method to detect early signs of breast cancer. In some cases, we determine you have breast cancer through a mammogram up to three years before you experience any signs or symptoms of cancer.
During a mammogram, you stand in front of the X-ray machine. Then, our technician will place your breast on a clear plastic plate. Next, another plate is placed on your breast from above. Our technician then takes the images. After, we conduct the test on the other one. Our practitioner will need to read the results. It can take up a few weeks to get your results back.
How do I receive results?
If your results are normal, you won’t need any further testing at this point. Our practitioner may discover abnormal results on your mammogram though. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have cancer. Sometimes, additional mammograms or other testing is necessary to determine if you have breast cancer.
What Are the Possible Results?
A mammogram produces a black-and-white image of your breasts. During this time, we’re looking for any signs of cancer or benign conditions. We may find calcium deposits, masses, or lumps. The test could indicate you have asymmetrical areas or dense regions.
How Often Should I Obtain A Mammogram?
Nowadays, the exact recommendations regarding how often you should have a mammogram varies. We’ll evaluate your risk and age to determine specific recommendations for you. Generally, you should start having routine mammograms between the ages of 40 to 45. You’ll want to have one every one to two years. After you reach the age of 54, you may only need to have a mammogram once every two years until you turn 74.
Some women are at a greater risk of developing breast cancer and should begin breast cancer screening before the age of 40. If you have precancerous breast lesions or have a family history of breast cancer, we may advise you to undergo a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) along with your routine mammograms.
What Happens If You Have Abnormal Results?
Sometimes, we’ll just advise you to come back in six months for another mammogram if we believe a mass is suspicious. On the other hand, sometimes you might need to come in for routine mammograms, and we’ll continue to monitor you for any changes.
Our practitioner might recommend that you undergo further testing to analyze any masses or other abnormalities that could signify cancer. You may need to have a biopsy of any lumps. This particular procedure consists of a practitioner removing a portion of the mass to evaluate it for cancer.
If cancer is detected, we may refer you to a specialist who can determine the best course of action for you, which may consist of removing the mass, chemo, immunotherapy, radiation, or a combination of these treatments.
